Getting to Know Your Internet Server Speed

The first question you should be asking yourself is how familiar are you with your server speed.  Nowadays, there are so many promotions or advertising campaigns from ISPs or internet service providers that have basically the same pitch – fastest, most reliable server speed.

So how will you really familiarize yourself with this?  Or better yet, how sure are you that your internet service provider is providing you with a connection same as what they promised you in the beginning?

Well, if you are not quite sure about the server speed, then there is speed test available for you out there.  This is a kind of test that checks your speed by sending and receiving packets of data to and from internet servers all over the world.

There are two options to choose from for this test.  One is through software that is designed for that particular purpose (checking the server speed).  And another is through websites wherein they test your connection while you’re online.

So how can you properly test your data transfer speeds?  First, access the test application.  Again, you can use software for this purpose on your computer and another is through websites.  There are some websites that asks for your country and which country you would like the test to be carried out, unlike applications which that have only one default server to test.

The next step is to see whether the latency, or ping, which is also the time.  Down to milliseconds it could count, you know!  Ping speeds can range drastically which really depends on your internet connection in the country.  That’s why good latency speeds of about 20 to 45 milliseconds are great especially from the developed countries.  In developing countries, latency could be over half a second.

After the latency test, download speed test comes in.  Here, the server you are connecting to will transmit the packets of data to your PC which then determines your speed.  Another step is also the upload test.  Here, data packets are sent from your PC to the server.  The speed when uploads are received will determine your uploading capacity.

Basically, the maximum server speed will be determined from the highest speed when the data was transferred from your PC and to your PC.  Just keep in mind that the farther your country is or the farther you are from your server, the slower your server speed or connection.
